BLUEPRINT UNITY CATALOG MIGRATION SNAPSHOT
National restaurant and entertainment business
Blueprint assisted a national retailer in migrating to Unity Catalog to overcome data access challenges hindering customer engagement and same-store sales. This migration improved data governance and resource efficiency, enabling real-time insights that enhanced personalized customer experiences while controlling costs.
Key achievements:
Data optimization:
Implemented a centralized data lake architecture integrating key data sources for real-time customer engagement insights.
Time savings:
Established data governance practices that enabled the customer engagement team to access necessary data without delays.
Cost Savings:
Addressed overspending on Databricks and Azure through automated cluster optimization and resource right-sizing, maximizing the efficient use of existing resources.
Noteworthy aspects:
- The client is a national retailer specializing in interactive in-person gaming experiences.
- Successfully expanded physical locations but struggled with same-store sales growth.
- Developed a dynamic customer loyalty program to enhance customer engagement.
- Faced challenges due to limited access to critical data sources, hindering personalized customer experiences.
- Considered switching cloud and analytics platform providers due to budget constraints and data accessibility issues.
Scenario
The client’s data strategy, built on a Databricks-centric architecture on Azure, was not effectively supporting its growth strategy. Despite successful physical expansion, increasing customer engagement and same-store sales remained elusive due to data accessibility issues.
Challenges
The client faced several significant challenges in executing its growth strategy. Limited access to critical data sources prevented the customer engagement team from gaining insights into customer transactions, visit frequency, and product engagement, ultimately hampering efforts to deliver a personalized customer experience. Additionally, the leaders of the data organization exhausted their annual budget for Databricks and Azure just nine months into the fiscal year, forcing them to request additional funding from leadership without success. This budgetary pressure, combined with ongoing data accessibility issues, led the client to consider switching cloud and analytics platform providers.
Solution
Blueprint was engaged as the Databricks Data Governance partner to unlock data across the enterprise. Blueprint conducted a Course of Action Assessment to define the data governance strategy and modernize the data estate with comprehensive cloud financial management. The Lakehouse Optimizer (LHO) was deployed to provide:
- Data observability across the data estate.
- Cost and performance management over Databricks and Azure environments.
- Visibility into Hive Metastore activity to assess the complexity of the Unity Catalog migration.
Results
Blueprint’s Databricks Champions successfully migrated the client to Unity Catalog and established data governance practices across the enterprise. A centralized data lake architecture was implemented, integrating essential data sources and providing the customer engagement team with real-time access to personalization data. The deployment of LHO optimized cluster usage and right-sized resources, allowing the client to extend their budget commitment without incurring additional cloud costs or needing to migrate to new platforms.
